Happy 100th birthday, Sunnyvale!

Thanks for everyone who attended the Sunnyvale Centennial Celebration on August 25th and 26th.  It was a great weekend!  The Centennial Parade Saturday morning and the events both afternoons helped bring the community together, and it was a weekend that will be talked about for years.

If you would like to see a rundown of events, photos and videos, please take a look at the following links:

Again, thanks for everyone who attended!

The History

Although we had been known locally as Sunnyvale for many years, the City was not formally incorporated until 1912.  Now the Sunnyvale Historical Society and Museum Association, along with the City of Sunnyvale and the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce, invites the community to take part in a celebration of our city and its history. There are special events all weekend, including a parade, festival, contests, swing dance, and bike tour. Also featured are the Mayor’s State of the City address and special rates for city residents on airship rides and facility tours.

Centennial Parade – Saturday, August 25, 10:00am

On the morning of Saturday, August 25th, more than 1,400 community members will march (and drive and dance and chant…) in celebration of Sunnyvale’s Centennial. Check out the parade page for all of the details, including information on parking and road closures, a parade lineup, and ways you can help.

Centennial Dance – Saturday, August 25, 7:00-11:00pm

For Dancers Only, together with the City of Sunnyvale Community Services Division, presents an evening of live music and dancing at the Sunnyvale Senior Center Orchard Pavilion.

Doors open at 7pm for Lindy Lab, an open and collaborative environment for dancers to practice their skills together or work on their solo dancing (DJ’d music). At 7:30pm, a brief beginner swing dancing lesson will be offered by Richard & Margot, guest instructors from Wednesday Night Hop in Mountain View. At 8pm, Top Shelf Big Band will take the stage to play jazz favorites from the 1930s and 40s for dancers and music fans of all ages.

Fly on a Zeppelin!

Not only will the airship be flying over our Centennial Celebration, but in honor of Sunnyvale’s 100th birthday, Airship Ventures is offering TWO promotions for Sunnyvale residents:

  1. Free behind-the-scenes ground tours of the world’s largest airship and Hangar 2 (a $40 value).
  2. $100 off any 45 min. or 90 min. South Bay flight from Moffett Field that is booked and flown in August. Simply contact Airship Ventures and mention the code “SUNNY 100″.

All guests must make a reservation for either ground tours or flights (link to details). Make your reservation by contacting Airship Ventures at (650) 969-8100, x111.

At the Blimps and Dirigibles Table, you will also be able to buy a raffle ticket to win 2 tickets to ride on the Airship Ventures’ zeppelin (valued at > $700). The drawing will happen at 4PM on Sunday.

Whiskers Contest

Men, here’s your chance to win something, and all you have to do is give your razors a rest. Let your facial hair grow, shape it and groom it, and a prize could be yours in the Whiskers Contest!  There will be audience judging both afternoons at around 3:30pm in front of the museum.

Victorian Tea Raffle

Have you ever experienced what it’s like to attend an English Afternoon Tea?  The Sunnyvale Historical Museum holds Victorian Teas at Christmas Time and in the Spring.

The museum will be holding a raffle on both Saturday and Sunday for two tickets to the 2012 Christmas Teas.  Purchase your tickets at the Museum Information Table, and the drawing will be at 4PM on Saturday and Sunday.
